About this book | About the authors | Buy now
The Encyclopedia of Event Management and Event Tourism marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of event studies; a field still in its formative stages. Fragmented by the sheer diversity of event types, disciplinary interests and theoretical frameworks, the study of events has long lacked a cohesive foundation. This ground-breaking volume offers an integrative and inclusive solution - consolidating state-of-the-art knowledge to establish a sustainable, comprehensive approach to the subject.

Led by an international team of expert Subject Editors, the Encyclopedia is structured across six key thematic areas:

  • Anthropo-Social Perspectives (Thomas Fletcher, Leeds Beckett University, UK)
  • Strategic Planning & Management (Alana Thomson, Newcastle University, Australia)
  • Marketing & Operations (Barbara Mazza, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy)
  • Workforce, Risk Management & Legal Issues (William O’Toole, International Events Development Specialist, Australia)
  • Policy, Politics & Economics (Nicholas Wise, Arizona State University, USA)
  • Event Tourism (Donald Getz, University of Calgary, Canada)
  • Research Philosophies and Epistemologies (Vassilios Ziakas, Leisure Insights Consultancy, Leeds, UK & Donald Getz, University of Calgary, Canada)

This comprehensive reference brings together critical ideas, theories, and practices that have shaped the events domain, with the primary aim of defining its ontology and mapping its interdisciplinary foundations. It provides a robust catalogue of key terms and topics, unveils existing knowledge gaps, and helps shape future research agendas. With contributions from scholars and experts across the globe, this volume not only maps the current landscape of event studies but also identifies emerging knowledge gaps, setting the agenda for future research. It offers accessible entries ranging from short definitions to in-depth overviews, ensuring both clarity and academic rigour.

Vast in scope and consistent in style, the Encyclopedia of Event Management and Event Tourism is an essential reference for researchers, practitioners, and students alike - laying the ontological and epistemological groundwork for the continued growth and study of event management and tourism.

Part of the Event Management Theory and Methods Series. This series examines the extent to which mainstream theory is being employed to develop event-specific theory, and to influence the very core practices of event management and event tourism. They introduce the theory, show how it is being used in the events sector through a literature review, incorporate examples and case studies written by researchers and/or practitioners, and contain methods that can be used effectively in the real world.
With online resource material, this mix-and-match collection is ideal for lecturers who need theoretical foundations and case studies for their classes, by students in need of reference works, by professionals wanting increased understanding alongside practical methods, and by agencies or associations that want their members and stakeholders to have access to a library of valuable resources.
